Growing together through music and dance

Written for Barangay’s 2002 Gala, “Karangalan ng Lahi” (Proud Heritage), this write-up tracks the evolution of Barangay from a group of six young girls called “Barangay Children’s Dance Troupe” to the multi-awarded performing arts group it is known today.

Kababayang Pilipino of British Columbia is a cultural performing arts group dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Filipino folk heritage through the presentation of authentic Filipino dance, music, song and drama.

Kababayang Pilipino provides the opportunity for its members to educate themselves and in turn, educate the community at large about the rich history and culture of the Filipino.

In line with the objectives of Canadian Multiculturalism, Folklorico Filipino (Canada) aims for the development and promotion of the Filipino identity through performing arts by:

Depicting Philippine culture through music, song, dance, and drama

Training interested Filipinos of all ages in Philippine folk music, dance, and drama

Showing the public Philippine customs, traditions, and history through folk song, dance and drama

Encouraging Filipinos and other Canadians to discover and develop their talents and abilities and to develop their potential in the performing arts.

As a cultural group, Folklorico proudly operates as a non-profit organization working from voluntary donations and contributions through sponsorship and performance fees. Dancers, choreographers and administrators work without financial remuneration. Volunteering is rewarded by the fulfilment achieved through the sharing of filipino culture and heritage. Folklorico has been involved with the social and cultural affairs of many organizations, schools, colleges, and governments. Since its founding in 1974, the commitment to promote the Filipino identity within the Canadian mosaic remains unchanged.

The Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe (FFDT)

The Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe (FFDT), established in 1966, is the premier traditional Filipino performing dance company in North America. FFDT is a non-profit organization and is a member of the Mississauga Arts Council, the Community Folk Arts Council of Toronto and Folklore Canada. Led by Executive Director Estrellita “Estring” Aguinaldo, Executive Producer Odette Aguinaldo, Artistic Director, Lynda Sue Aguinaldo and Musical Director Rose Aguinaldo, the company is poised to continue the legacy of the late George Aguinaldo whose unmatched artistic contribution has helped start and enhance the aritistry of many Filipino folk groups. Its success and mission has made this dance troupe an institution to follow for many up and coming cultural dance troupes from around the world and for Filipinos and Filipino culture enthusiasts. Based in Mississauga, Ontario, this acclaimed Filipino Canadian folk arts ensemble, made up exclusively of volunteers, has been dedicated to promoting, preserving, and propagating Philippine arts and culture in Canada and the world through music, song and dance for over 40 years.

Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company

The Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company is one of the best folkloric dance troupes in the Philippines today and has been performing since 1961 in the local as well as international scene. Its repertoire consists of Philippine traditional dances and music showing a kaleidoscope of Philippine culture through the performing arts.

The company started out as the The Leyte Filipiniana Dance Troupe, founded in 1960 by Teresita Veloso Pil as a small school project, with the encouragement of Sister Mary Canisius, School Director of the Holy Infant College in Tacloban City, Philippines. Its initial performance in September 1961 for the school’s College Day celebration was so successful that it generated invitations to perform in other parts of the city, in the province, and eventually all over the country.

The Silayan Dance Company

Silayan was born in the 70′s out of the vision of its founder, Sonia Capadocia. Motivated by a continuous search for cultural identity in a foreign land, Sonia, an award-winning school teacher and noted dance instructor, gathered a handful of young students and taught them some Filipino folk dances. Fascinated by the exotic rhythms and intricate dance steps, the youngsters wanted to learn more. What began as a fun-filled activity achieved professional recognition when the group was invited to perform throughout the Philippine-American community and in many events throughout the city. At this time, the ensemble was called “Sulu,” a Filipino word for light. From donations collected at performances, new costumes and musical instruments were ordered from the Philippines. Sonia managed the ensemble and changed the name to “Silayan.”

Philippine Impulse Dancer

The Philippine Impulse Dancers were formed in early 2001 by a small group of dedicated dancers, their main aim being to enjoy themselves and please their audiences. The group registered as a non-profit organization and is funded by donations, fundraising and grants. They are also member of the Auckland & Waitakere Multicultural societies.By the end of the first year they had performed at 14 venues all over Auckland. These were mainly private parties, church events or small cultural festivals. They also held a talent night at the end of the year to help raise funds to pay for costumes and accessories etc that proved to be very popular.
