Parangal Dance Company is a Filipino Folk DanceGroup base in the San Francisco Bay Area that aspires to inspire.

Founded in May 2008, the company consists of members who share the same passion and love of Philippine folk dancing. Through research with experts and indigenous groups in the Philippines, public and private performances, and free dance workshops, the organization aim to entertain, inspire, encourage, and educate the Filipino Americans and diverse communities so that they can gain a better understanding and appreciation of the Philippine life, culture, and tradition.

The Silayan Dance Company

Silayan was born in the 70′s out of the vision of its founder, Sonia Capadocia. Motivated by a continuous search for cultural identity in a foreign land, Sonia, an award-winning school teacher and noted dance instructor, gathered a handful of young students and taught them some Filipino folk dances. Fascinated by the exotic rhythms and intricate dance steps, the youngsters wanted to learn more. What began as a fun-filled activity achieved professional recognition when the group was invited to perform throughout the Philippine-American community and in many events throughout the city. At this time, the ensemble was called “Sulu,” a Filipino word for light. From donations collected at performances, new costumes and musical instruments were ordered from the Philippines. Sonia managed the ensemble and changed the name to “Silayan.”

I’ve been folk dancing since I was 10years old and love it. It all started when I was still living in the Philippines at the navy base, Subic Bay. Then I moved back to San Diego and joined the Samahan PhilippineDance Company and I danced with them for four years, also danced in Kababayan while I was attending Bell Junior High School. I still wanted to dance when I moved to Hawaii and I joined H. Wayne Mendoza’s Philippine dance group, Himigbayan. It is a one of the Philippine folkdance groups here on the island of Oahu. Hopefully after college I’ll still be dancing away…

PACIFICA Dancers

PACIFICA officially started in 1992, although Cherry has been actively involved with Filipino-American organizations teaching and performing Philippine Folkdances since 1981. The purpose of this cultural group is to preserve and promote the Philippine culture and heritage. PACIFICA also has a Polynesian Group and performs at luaus, weddings, country clubs and other cultural events.

LIKHA-Pilipino Folk Ensemble believes in the power of dance and music to educate the Pilipino American community and diverse audiences about the Philippine culture.

Pilipino Americans are the fastest growing Asian American population in the United States, however we are not seen as a unified community.

LIKHA works to showcase the diversity of our culture on the stage to bridge differences within Pilipino American cultures, and to educate Pilipino American youth and adults who do not have the opportunities to learn about their culture. We also seek to educate other cultures who have never seen or heard about the Philippines.

The PHILIPPINE DANCE COMPANY of Boston, Inc. (PDCo) displays the true spirit of volunteerism, cooperation, friendly and harmonious association. A non-profit group, its main objective is to preserve and promote the Philippine’s rich cultural heritage. Where else can we start to perpetuate our Philippine culture, but with our own families! The company has provided a place for our American born children not only to be conscious of their culture, but to appreciate, learn and be proficient in performing traditional Philippine folk dances.

The members have represented the Filipino-American community at various ethnic festivals and community events not only in the Boston area but throughout the New England states.

The dance company’s repertoire provides a window for the diverse and rich cultural heritage of the Philippines, its customs and traditions, its many regions and the people’s different ways of life, their love for the beauty of the nature that surrounds them, their gaiety and friendliness.
