Growing together through music and dance

Written for Barangay’s 2002 Gala, “Karangalan ng Lahi” (Proud Heritage), this write-up tracks the evolution of Barangay from a group of six young girls called “Barangay Children’s Dance Troupe” to the multi-awarded performing arts group it is known today.

Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company

The Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company is one of the best folkloric dance troupes in the Philippines today and has been performing since 1961 in the local as well as international scene. Its repertoire consists of Philippine traditional dances and music showing a kaleidoscope of Philippine culture through the performing arts.

The company started out as the The Leyte Filipiniana Dance Troupe, founded in 1960 by Teresita Veloso Pil as a small school project, with the encouragement of Sister Mary Canisius, School Director of the Holy Infant College in Tacloban City, Philippines. Its initial performance in September 1961 for the school’s College Day celebration was so successful that it generated invitations to perform in other parts of the city, in the province, and eventually all over the country.

The Cultural Center of the Philippines nurtures and promotes artistic excellence, Filipino aesthetics and identity, and positive cultural values towards a humanistic global society.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines was created in 1966 through Executive Order no. 30, with the purpose of promoting and preserving Filipino arts and culture. It was formally inaugurated on September 8, 1969, starting a three month long inaugural festival opened by the epic musical Dularawan. Since then, the CCP has sought to truly embody its logo of katotohanan (truth), kagandahan (beauty) and kabutihan (goodness). The best artists from all over the country and around the world have graced the CCP theaters and galleries, enthralling Filipinos for over thirty years.

Enjoying success, winning several Australian National Amateur Grade Titles under the training of Mr. Stanley Alexander, discussions followed leading to the idea of forming an association to deliver quality dance education to the masses in the Philippines.

We envision the House of Dance as one of the leading and most prominent jazz dance schools within the country while at the same time offering a wide range of quality training in dance genres such as ballet, contemporary dance, street and break dances, Hula, Polynesian dances and tutorials in international folk dances, not to mention choreography services. We also hope to establish and/or promote a professional team of dancers, the House of Dance Company, as the official performing team of the House of Dance in various dance-related fora. It further aspires to be a training ground for the next generation of dance educators.

Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company

Created in March of 2003, the Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company was formed by dance enthusiasts that enjoy the beauty of Filipino folk dance. Following the statement of Philippine national artist and folk dance research pioneer Francisca Reyes-Aquino, “Let folk dances be as they are – of the folk. We can not sacrifice heritage for progress,” Hiyas strives to present Filipino folk dance in its most traditional form in an era where authentic steps and movements are modernized or forgotten. The word hiyas (pronounced hee-yahs) means “jewel” or “gem,” referring to how its members truly treasure Philippine folk arts and culture. Hiyas is proudly a part of the Filipino Youth Coalition, a nonprofit organization geared toward cultural awareness among Filipino youth in the South Bay.
